News
Alpine Half Century Ride returns in 2009 with the same great ride, plus a longer one. We are taking 2008 off as we negotiate with the school district for ownership of the surplus school property.
Alpine Community Center is proud to announce the award of funding from Trust Management Services, LLC and Benton County Foundation for a new program that benefits kids and parents in south Benton County. “This new kinder-care program is a perfect example grass roots community organization,” says board secretary Evelyn Lee. “Local parents expressed their need for child care, and the community center is coordinating activities to make it a reality.”
The new kinder-care program, to begin this fall, will provide caring and professional staff with a nurturing and learning environment for kindergarten-age kids. The facility will coordinate with Monroe School district to bus kids to and from their half-day kindergarten program in Monroe.
Parents who want more information about kinder-care for the 2008-2009 year should contact Rachel Unrein at 424-2410.
Teen Group. This program is so new it doesn’t even have a name yet! It is the perfect example of a home-grown program that meets specific needs in the community. Here’s the story. A group of teens began meeting with adult supervision to organize a town hall meeting about teen drug and alcohol use through the Strengthening Rural Families organization in Philomath. The teens were engaged, enthused, and proactive. They involved other teens in some “practice sessions” before the town meeting, and they began to express their desire for more teen activities. They organized and put on a very successful teen dance with the help of their adult guides, and they want to continue generating teen activities. Those involved are just entering their junior year. Alpine Community Center has agreed to adopt the group as one of our programs, providing them with a non-profit umbrella, and we will recruit a teen member for our board of directors. We hope this is just the beginning of a process that continues to grow.
Transition. This year, strong focus has been placed on negotiating with Monroe School District to determine the future of the Alpine campus. The district leadership has decide to sell the facility and our organization has responded by assembling an advisory Transition Task Force which met several times. This group included 30 community members who were invited to share their special expertise to examine all issues surrounding our potential purchase of the facility and alternative courses of action that would enable perpetuation of our programs. At present, our offer to purchase the facility has been rejected by the district but we continue occupancy with a month-to-month rental agreement and have made arrangements to move to the Bellfountain church that occupies the old Bellfountain school facility if needed. One of the successes of the Transition Task Force has been to strengthen relations with the Alpine Garden Club, which operates Alpine Chapel Park directly opposite the Alpine school facility. With their enthusiastic help, w have developed contingencies that would enable us to build a new facility there if the school district does eventually sell the surplus Alpine campus. Meanwhile, we proceed with programs and events in the knowledge that Alpine Community Center is more than a facility, it is a grass-roots community volunteer organization meeting real needs by mobilizing local community support.

Low-cost Local Preschool
-
When Alpine Elementary closed, Head Start moved to Harrisburg and opportunities for local parents of preschool aged kids seemed to dwindle. SBCC stepped in with a parent cooperative preschool. Tuition is low and parents who can participate in the classroom supervision pay a reduced rate. Tuition is low regardless of the number of enrolled kids because Alpine Community Center subsidizes this program. Alpine Community Center ensures that the preschool tuition remains low by raising funds to cover the teacher’s salary and operating costs. Alpine Community Center also organizes free monthly parenting classes for all participants and everyone in the community.

Keeping the Gymnasium Open to the Community
